Baba Farid and Bahauddin Zakariya: The Story of the Slave Girl’s Destiny

The history of Sufism in South Asia is filled with stories of divine love, compassion, and spiritual transformation. Among the most heart-touching incidents is the meeting of Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ) and Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Multani (رحمۃ اللہ علیہ) in Multan Sharif. This story highlights the power of dua (prayer), the mercy of Allah, and the spiritual strength of saints who devoted their lives to guiding humanity.

The Slave Girl in Bahauddin Zakariya’s House

Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya had a slave girl (کنیز) who served in his household. Despite living in the company of a great wali (friend of Allah), her forehead bore the words:

“Hāzihi Shaqiyatun – This woman is destined for Hell.”

Even after the constant prayers of Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya, her fate remained unchanged.

The Arrival of Baba Farid

One day, Baba Farid Ganjshakar arrived in Multan to meet his spiritual elder. During this blessed meeting, the slave girl was sent to pour water for Baba Farid’s wudu (ablution).

As she poured water, Baba Farid’s gaze fell upon her, and he noticed the same writing on her forehead declaring her doomed for Hell. Deeply moved, Baba Farid raised his hands in dua and pleaded before Allah:

“O Allah! She has lived in the house of Your wali. How can it be that she ends up in Hell? Change her destiny!”

The Test of Patience and Prayer

Each time she brought water, the vessel would mysteriously become empty before wudu was completed. Baba Farid insisted on continuing, refusing to complete his wudu until Allah changed her fate.

He prayed with persistence:

“By Your honor and glory, I will not bow in sajdah (prostration) until You grant her Jannah (Paradise).”

The Transformation of Destiny

Finally, Allah’s mercy descended. The words on her forehead changed from “Shaqiyatun” (Hell-bound) to:

“Hāzihi Sa‘idatun – This woman is destined for Paradise.”

At that moment, Baba Farid smiled, completed his wudu, and offered his prayer with gratitude.

Lessons from the Story

This story is more than history—it is a timeless reminder.

  • The Power of Dua: A sincere prayer can change destiny.
  • The Mercy of Allah: No soul is beyond Allah’s forgiveness.
  • The Role of Saints: The awliya (friends of Allah) intercede with love and humility.
  • Hope for Humanity: Even those who feel hopeless can find the doors of Jannah through Allah’s grace.

Famous Quote of Baba Farid

“The true lover of Allah never gives up on the mercy of the Almighty.”

Conclusion

The story of Baba Farid and the slave girl shows us that Allah’s mercy is infinite, and His saints are a reflection of compassion and intercession. This incident continues to inspire believers, reminding us to never lose hope in Allah’s rahmah (mercy).
