In our modern world, we see a fascinating and relentless pursuit. Thousands upon thousands of people will compete for a single government job, dedicating months and years to preparation, believing it to be the ultimate source of security and ease. They leave no stone unturned, no application unfiled. Yet, in this frantic race for worldly rizq (sustenance), how many of us approach our connection with our Creator with the same dedication and intensity?
This article explores a profound truth often forgotten: that true ease, provision, and opportunities are not created by our efforts alone but are granted solely by the will of Allah Almighty. Our striving is necessary, but the outcome is always in His Hands, channeled through the boundless blessings of His Final Messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Foundation of All Deeds: Purity of Intention (Ikhlas)
The cornerstone of a life pleasing to Allah is Ikhlas—sincerity. It is the act of purifying our intentions, ensuring that every action we undertake is done solely for the pleasure of Allah, seeking His countenance alone, without desire for praise, recognition, or worldly gain.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Actions are judged by intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to their intention.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This hadith is a powerful reminder. Applying for a job is a worldly effort (asbab), but the intention behind it can transform it into an act of worship. Are we working to provide halal sustenance for our families and to be a source of benefit to the community? Or is it driven purely by greed, status, and a deep-seated fear that our rizq is in the hands of a human employer? True faith in Allah means believing that He is the Ultimate Provider (Ar-Razzaq), and our efforts are merely a means through which He delivers His bounty.
The Etiquette of Listening: A Path to Divine Guidance
One of the greatest blessings Allah bestows upon a believer is the opportunity to sit in gatherings of knowledge (bayan). However, the benefit derived is directly proportional to the respect and reverence with which we listen.
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
“So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.” (Quran 7:204)
When a speaker reminds us of Allah, of our shortcomings, and of the path to success in this life and the next, we should listen with humble hearts and open minds. This is not mere passive hearing; it is an active spiritual exercise. We are to internalize the message, allow it to soften our hearts, and resolve to act upon it. This attentive listening is a key to unlocking divine Islamic guidance and mercy.
Why Reminders Divide: The Receptive Heart vs. The Hardened One
In any gathering, you will find two types of people when a reminder is given:
- The Guided: Those who listen, reflect, and feel a stir in their soul. They see the truth in the words and are motivated to change, repent, and draw closer to Allah. For them, the reminder is a lifeline, a much-needed course correction on their spiritual journey. They understand that the talk of trust in Allah is not a metaphor but the ultimate reality.
- The Dismissive: Those who hear the same words but receive them as a joke, a criticism, or an irrelevant lecture. They might mock or feel annoyance. The Quran beautifully describes this state: “And when it is said to him, ‘Fear Allah,’ pride in the sin takes hold of him…” (Quran 2:206). Their hearts have become hardened by the world, clouded by arrogance or habitual neglect, making them unable to absorb the light of guidance.
This difference is not in the message itself, which is pure and clear, but in the condition of the hearts receiving it.
The Illusion of Control and the Reality of Divine Decree
We exhaust ourselves running after opportunities as if they are the ultimate goal. We see a job posting and believe that achieving it is the source of our happiness. We forget the timeless wisdom that ease and hardship both come from Allah alone.
Allah says:
“And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision (rizq)…” (Quran 11:6)
This is not a call to inaction. It is a call to balanced action: to strive diligently in the worldly realm as the Prophet ﷺ taught us, but to anchor our hearts in the unwavering belief that the result is decreed by Allah. Our trust should not be in our CV or our interview skills, but in Allah who controls the hearts of the interviewers. When we prioritize our connection with Him—through prayer, sincerity, and seeking His blessings through love for the Prophet ﷺ—He opens doors we never knew existed and grants ease in ways we could never have imagined.
Conclusion: Your Journey to Real Ease Begins Now
The race for the world will never end. There will always be another opportunity to chase, another milestone to achieve. But true, lasting success—the success that brings peace to the heart, barakah (blessing) in our time and wealth, and happiness in this life and the next—is found only in one place: turning towards Allah.
Strengthen your connection with Him. Purify your intentions in every task. Listen to words of guidance with a heart yearning for truth. Place your absolute trust in Allah for your rizq and all your affairs.
Remember, thousands may apply for a single opportunity, but when Allah wills something for you, no one can prevent it. And when He withholds something, no amount of striving can bring it your way. So strive, but let your heart rest not in the striving, but in Him.
Make your life a testament to the verse:
“And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him.” (Quran 65:3)
Take that step today. Turn to Him with sincerity, and witness how He transforms your life and grants you a ease that the world can never give.
